Dance feature on the banks of the Adyar
Dancers Balagurunathan and wife Gayathri had a challenge on their hands this December.
To choreograph a dance drama on the life and times of Col. Olcott, founder of the Theosophical Society (TS) movement.
Every year, TS hosts its annual convention at its international headquarters in Adyar, Chennai, and a cultural event is always packed into the programme of talks, meetings and discussions.
A senior member of TS, G Sundari, was the resource person for this production in which the Balagurunathans and about 20 artistes performed last week at the TS campus.
The production was in Hindi, the lyrics were by Kamakshi Subramaniam and music by T. K. Padmanabha.
Olcott and Madame Blavatsky sailed to India, after the TS was founded in America, came down to Madras, surveyed what was then called Huddleston Gardens on the banks of river Adyar and bought 32 acres of land to build the TS headquarters.
Gayatri's mother, the late dancer-guru Krishnaveni, used to produce the annual TS productions.
