Honours for Bombay Sisters

Rasika Ranjani Sabha hosts its annual music festival at Asthika Samajam, Alwarpet, Chennai.

At the inauguration on January 3, 2006, Bombay Sisters were honoured with the 'Kala Ratna' award.

The fest is on till Jan. 12.

Ramayanam in Dance

Narada Gana Sabha hosts a 'Ramayana Bharatham Dance Festival' from January 6 to 8, 2006 at its main hall. The fest features a duet dance presentation of the epic in five different languages.

Schedule:
6 Jan: 6 pm - Balakandam from Valmiki Ramayanam (Sanskrit) by Sheejith Kumar and Lavanya Ananth; 7.15 pm - Ayodhya Kandam from Ranganatha Ramayanam (Telugu) by Roja Kannan and Priya Murle

7 Jan: 6 pm - Aranya Kandam from Ramacharithmanas of Tulsidas (Hindi), Gayatri Balagurunathan and A. Lakshman; 7.15 pm - Kishkinda Kandam from Adhyatma Ramayanam of Thunjathu Ramanuja Ezhuthachan (Malayalam) by Shajilal and Ranjit Babu

8 Jan: 6 pm - Sundara Kandam from Ramaavatharam of Kamban (Tamil) by Narthaki Natraj and Sangeetha Isvaran; 7.15 pm - Yuddha Kandam and Pattabhishekam from Arunachalakavi's Rama Natakam (Tamil) by Aadith Narayan and Ganga Thampi

Ramani's Academy's music fest

Ramani's Academy of Flute hosts its annual music festival from January 4 to 8, 2006 at Narada Gana Sabha's mini hall.

On Jan. 8, flute vidwan Tambhi Kottai T.S. Ramamoorthy will be honoured.

Music concerts are held from 4 pm onwards daily.

Album of navavarana kritis

U.S. based Carnatic vocalist Bhavani Prakash released two albums - Dikshitar's 'Navavarana Kritis' (Vocal) and 'Double Take - Veena and Venu' at an event on Dec. 28 at Raga Sudha Hall.

The albums have been recorded and produced by Anandabhairavi, Fanwood, New Jersey, U.S.A. The CDs and cassettes were released by senior mridangist Vellore Ramabhadran and musician Palghat T.R. Rajaram received the first copies.

Pongal Nagaswaram fest

The Pongal Nagaswara Isai Vizha will be held from Jan. 10 to 16, at Krishna Gana Sabha. The 'Sangeetha Choodamani' will be conferred on nagaswaram artiste Sembanarkoil S.R.D. Vaidhyanathan on Jan. 10.

Honours for Chitra Visweswaran

Senior Bharatanatyam dancer Chitra Visweswaran was conferred the title of 'Natya Kala Shikamani' at the valedictory function of the annual music festival at The Indian Fine Arts Society on January 4, 2006. Senior dance gurus Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy and K.J. Sarasa offered their felicitations.

Artistes selected for the best concerts and lec-dem and prize winners of the talent promotion concerts received their certificates.

Dance festivals

January is a time for dance festivals at various sabhas. Here is the schedule...

The Mylapore Fine Arts Club hosts a dance fest for young talent from January 2 to 15, 2006. Dance reciatls will be held at 5.45 pm and 7.15 pm daily.

Thyaga Brahma Gana sabha hosts a Bharatham fest from Jan. 2 to 18, at Obul Reddy Hall, Vanimahal premises, at 6.30 pm daily.

Narada Gana Sabha hosts a dance fest from Jan. 9 to 14, at 6 pm and 7.30 pm daily.

Krishna Gana Sabha's dance fest will be held from Jan.2 to 9, at 6 pm and 7.30 pm daily.

Kartik Fine Arts presents a dance fest from Jan 5 to 12 (at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's main hall) and from Jan. 16 to 24 at Narada Gana Sabha's mini hall. Dance recitals at 4.30 pm, 6 pm and 7.30 pm daily.

Brahma Gana Sabha hosts a dance fest at Petachi auditorium, MCTM school campus and Parthasarathy Swami Sabha hosts a dance fest at the Mylapore fine Arts hall in January.

Bhairavi Gana Sabha's fest

Sri Bhairavi Gana Sabha hosts its 4th annual music fsetival from Jan. 5 to 9, 2006 at Vidya Bharathi, Bheemasena Garden Road, Mylapore.

Awards were given to J. Krishnamachari, Secretray, Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha and dancer Sailaja.

'Circles and Strings' music album

Young flautist Atul Kumar releases a music album, 'Circles and Strings' on Jan. 7 at 10.30 am at Bharat Kalachar.

The album release function will be followed by a flute concert by Athul Kumar.

Sadas at The Music Academy

At the 'Sadas' held at The Music Academyon January 1, 2006, the 'Sangita Kalanidhi' title was conferred on senior violinist M. Chandrasekharan.

The 'Sangitha Kalacharya' was awarded to musicians B.V. Raman and Seethalakshmi Venkatesan. The TTK award was presented to Pandanallur Gopalakrishnan (Bharatanatyam) and Chitravina N. Ravikiran. The 'Vaggeyakara Award' was presented to Vijayawada based musician N.C.H. Krishnamacharyulu.

A host of other musicians were also honoured for the best presentations during the December Season 2005.
