Natyrangam, the dance wing of Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai has once again brought together four young dancers to collaborate and create a work to celebrate the timeless brilliance of poet Subramania Bharathi.
The unifying thread for this year’s production is Vedam in Bharathi’s thought and works. The influence of Upanishadic concepts is manifest in Bharathi’s thought, and directly find reflection in his writings.
From Kakkai Chiraginile and Poiyyo Meyyo, to Arive Deivam and Parasivavellam — his poems capture the call to rise above allegories that mire man’s mind and find the connection between Brahman and Atman.
The imagery and impact of his words make them a delightful challenge to musicians and dancers. Setting Bharathi’s words to music for this production are Lalgudi G J R Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. Their interpretation has lent a beautiful dimension to the work unfolding nebulous layers of the poetry.
In their own words, “ The power of Bharatiyar’s poetry lends itself to varied interpretations. To bring out the intensity of his thoughts in Music has been quite an experience . We have chosen the ragas to suit the Dance presentation as well. It will be a double delight to watch ‘Veda Bharathi’ performed at the poet’s house in Triplicane”
The dancers coming together to choreograph and present Veda Bharathi are Manasvini Ramachandran, daughter and disciple of Revathi Ramachandran; Medha Hari, disciple of Anita Guha; Sai Santhosh Radhakrishnan, disciple of Adyar K Lakshman and Apoorva Jayaraman, disciple of Priyadarsini Govind.
Veda Bharathi has been crafted especially to be presented at the 21st annual Bharathi Thiruvizha which will be held at the Bharathi Ninaivu Illam on the 12th of December 2014 at 7.15pm.
Veda Bharathi will also feature as a more elaborate version along with explanatory interludes by Sujatha Vijayaraghavan, under the auspices of Krishna Gana Sabha at 9:30am on the 24th December 2014.
