The multi-faceted musician T V Gopalakrishnan has been chosen by The Music Academy Madras for the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award for this year.
This news was made known by N. Murali, president of the Academy in Chennai on Sunday. The Academy team said their choice of TVG, as the vidwan is known among friends, was unanimous.
The Chennai-based TVG has so far been honored in the past with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and the government's Padma Bhushan award.
The 82 year old TVG hails from a family of musicians and is a native of Thirupunithara, Kerala state. A disciple of the great Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Gopalakrishnan migrated to Madras in the 1950s and has made this is home since then, with a base in the neighborhood of Adyar.
A master of the Carnatic and Hindustani streams of classical music, TVG is multi-talented - he plays the mirdangam and sings, he composes, indulges in fusion and in film music and has been a guru to a variety of people who are big names in their own worlds. People like music directors Ilayaraja and A R Rahman, percussionist Sivamani and saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath.
At this age, he continues to perform and travel all over and when he is at a podium, he has great tales to share - of his music and musician friends.
The Sangita Kalanidhi award will be given to TVG at the 'sadas' of the Academy's conference, which will be held on January 1, 2015 - after the music conference and concerts fest.
