Chief minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated The Music Academy's 86th Conference and Concerts on Saturday evening, Dec.15.
.She requested the team of the Academy to sit down and think of a global arts festival in Chennai at this time of the year and promised her help.
"You can count on me for support, " she said turning to N. Murali, the Academy president and two others of his team who were seated on stage.
The chief minister seemed tuned in to this event from the time she walked on to the stage at about 4 pm today and clapped a few times to acknowledge statements made by the speakers before her.
She was also warm to artistes like Dr R. Vedavalli and Prof. Trichy Sankaran besides Sangita Kalanidhi-designate Trichur V Ramachandran, who were also seated on the stage indicating how she, once a classical dancer and a film artiste also respected one of her own.
She read from a prepared speech, touching on Tamil music and local arts history, of the greats who contributed to 'pann' music and later to Carnatic music.
And then rounded off saying she would not talk on the modern Carnatic music in a place like the Academy, hinting that this was an educated audience of vidwans and rasikas, and added, "Classical dance is my subject but I will keep it for another day."
Hundreds of AIADMK cadres lined the roads leading to the Academy, to greet their party leader. They then trooped into the auditorium to catch the event and ran out the moment it was over to catch a glimpse of Jayalalithaa as she left this campus.
Many state ministers had arrived at the Academy and greeted the CM when she arrived and sat in the front row for the event.
