Dear Madam,
This is for my daughter, who loves dancing. She's 12 years old. She's learning dance, has performed in various stages, has won lot of prizes. She has performed in Guruvayur, which is our hometown. How do we get a chance to perform in various stages like in Chidambaram, Chennai etc. What is the formality? Can you please help us? She practices regularly without fail every morning for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
-Sreenarayanan
It is good to hear about your daughter's interest in dance. To perform in Chennai and other places, you have to send an application to the secretaries of the various sabhas in Chennai and to the Natyanjali Trust in Chidambaram. Addresses are available in music directories and websites too.
Dear Madam,
I am an engineering graduate having a master's degree in computer application. I have passed my proficiency examination in classical Bharatanatyam conducted by KSEEB, Government of Karnataka. I am a recipient of national scholarship for Bharatanatyam by HRD, New Delhi. I want to do Ph.d in Performing Arts ( dance - Bharatanatyam). Please advise me whether I can do it through correspondence course in any esteemed university. If so, give me the details to go further in this regard.

You may write to Annamalai University, Chidambaram for more info on this. You will also need a guide.
Dear Madam,
I am 23 years old and I haven't learnt dance. Is it possible for me to learn now? I am right now in USA. We don't have dance classes here (Indian dance) in Indianapolis. If you know someone who can teach us can you tell us? Or are there any CDs from which I can learn dance?
-A rasika, U.S.A
It's never too old to learn dance. It is a good form of exercise for the body. You may check out the narthaki.com website for a directory of dancers and info on classes in your area. Several VCDs and DVDs on dance are available now, brought out by Swathi Soft Solutions, Super Audio and others. Dancer Jayanthi Subramaniam has brought out a DVD on adavus. You may check out the KutcheriBuzz website for more info.
Dear Madam,
I am 21 years of age currently pursuing my post-graduate degree in Chennai. I was a student in Bharatanatyam in Mumbai for 12 years until last year when I had to leave my music and dance classes for this course in Chennai. While in Mumbai I saw to it that nothing, not even studies came to stop me from dancing but I failed in that last year.
I had decided to continue dance in Chennai but the course I am doing is quite demanding. Also, I didn't know how to go about searching for a guru. It's been a year in Chennai now and also a year since I stopped dancing. I have another year in Chennai and don't want to miss this opportunity of being in this city where there are so many learned elders who can make me a better dancer.
I sincerely request you to please guide me and let me know of any respected guru who would be willing to give me an in depth training on the nuances of Bharatanatyam while I'm here. I have heard of my friends coming down to Chennai for a year to receive special training in music but do not know of any such thing in dance. After this course I am willing to stay back and pursue dance if given the opportunity.
My dance style is in the lines of respected Guru Dandayudapani Pillai of Thanjavur. Could you please give me some number or address of gurus who would be willing to consider me?
-Pournima
Depending on which area you live in, you may contact the following artistes in Chennai who may be willing to teach you, in the style you've mentioned: Guru K.J. Sarasa, Mandaveli, Urmila Sathyanarayanan, Kilpauk, A. Lakshman, Anna Nagar. You may refer the dancers directory brought out by ABHAI for the contact info or contact KutcheriBuzz.
Dear Madam,
I trained in Indian classical dances, Kuchipudi and Bharatantyam for 5 years each and gave a lot of performances. I started learning Kuchipudi when I was 5 and started learning Kalakshetra style Bharatanatyam when I was around 10. My dance practice ended up at my 10th grade since academics have taken priority. I regret to think that till now I didn't get a chance to practice my dance again. Now I am 32 and have 6 years old daughter. I do remember all adavus perfectly, but none of the items.
I live in US, and we have some Indian dance schools, which are a little far. I have been teaching my daughter now.
Knowing this, many of my neighbours are requesting me to start a dance class. Shall I?
My daughter is now learning adavus. Before she completes all her adavus, I would like to have videos on Kalakshetra style Bharatanatyam. I've been searching for them from long ago with no success. Are there any videos available on Kalakshetra style Bharatanatyam? If so, could you suggest me where could I find these videos. I am looking for the videos, which should have at least a list of items.
-Sai, U.S.A
It is good to know you're teaching your daughter. You may contact Swathi Soft Solutions for CDs on Kalakshetra style of adavus. In summer you may also visit Chennai to attend workshops in dance. Leela Samson, who is the Director of Kalakshetra, has also started classes for various age-groups at Kalakshetra.
Super Audio has brought out DVDs and audio CDs of Bharatanatyam items. You may contact KutcheriBuzz for more info.
